In reality, the customer does not know what they want up front beyond having a problem or an opportunity, a concept, or an idea. Changes to the requirements will trigger project delays, budget overruns, or smaller feature sets and there will be a disconnect between the sponsor and the team. Traditional requirements do not acknowledge the inherent uncertainty in product development that agile methodologies seek to embrace.

This chapter covered the requirements process in agile environments and the contribution of the BA to its success. We also looked at the process of building user stories and at a series of supporting tools that help develop, enhance, clarify, and visualize the requirements—including personas and use cases. Whether the BA skills are performed by team members or by a dedicated BA, they are important for the success of the agile requirements process.
